In this XR performance titled THE SEAM, the boundaries between virtual and physical worlds are blurred as a seamless integration of live performance and a VR video takes place. The performance features a collaborative ensemble consisting of composer Jelena Dabic, a pianist Marcelo Gama, and live- electronics Carlos Andres Rico and seven sewing volunteers, creating a fusion of music, visuals, and craftsmanship. The pianist's live presence adds an immediate and connected element to the virtual narrative, extending the live performance beyond the VR video's 17-minute duration to a full two hours. The SEAM is an immersive installation that delves into the realms of virtual reality music-performance. Jelena Dabic's concept and music composition draw inspiration from the rich tapestry of folk songs and traditional children's melodies originating from the Danube countries. This music piece unfolds in distinct movements, each representing a country graced by the Danube's flow. At the core of THE SEAM lies an exploration of cultural diversity, symbolized by the music and meticulously designed costumes. These garments serve as vessels of folklore influences, each piece - whether a shirt or a pair of pants - embodying the essence of a distinct culture found along the Danube's banks. Central to the piece is pianist Marcelo Gama, who embodies the spirit of the Danube itself. room_experience #1 In diesem Jahr widmet sich die Reihe mit dem Moto „room experience“ dem Thema „Raum“ – der Raum als Aufführungsort und als leibliche Landschaft. In dem Kraftwerk Bille wird ein Konzert mit Künstler*innen aus verschiedenen Ländern der Seidenstraße stattfinden. Der Abend beginnt mit dem Auftritt des indonesischen Gamelan Orchesters, das traditionelle Musik und Tänze aus Java vorstellen wird. Anschließend wird das indonesische Anklung Ensemble der chinesischen Trommel, von der Schlagzeugerin Lin Chen gespielt, gegenübergestellt. Traditionelle Instrumente aus Afghanistan und Iran fusionieren musikalisch mit syrischen Gesang und führen eine Reise entlang der Seidenstraße. Das Wort „Gamelan“ bezeichnet sowohl eine Musikrichtung, die vor Jahrhunderten in den alten Fürstenhöfen der indonesischen Inseln Java und Bali entstanden ist, als auch das aus traditionellen Instrumenten bestehende Orchester, das diese Musik spielt. Ein großes Gamelan, so wie diejenigen, die heute noch in den Palästen von Solo, Yogyakarta oder auf Bali zu hören sind, kann aus ca. 30 Musikern (Sänger/innen nicht mitgerechnet) und doppelt so vielen Instrumenten bestehen, ein kleineres aus weniger als 10 Musikern. Gamelanmusik ist fast ausschließlich auf Java und Bali zu hören. Dort wird sie regelmäßig zu religiösen Feiern gespielt, zu sozialen Anlässen wie z. B. Hochzeiten, als Begleitung zu Tanz, Puppentheater oder Schattenspiel, oder auch als Konzert. ​ Gamelans verwenden zwei eigene Tonleitern bzw. zwei verschiedene Stimmungen und sie haben dafür zwei unterschiedliche Instrumenten-Sets: ein Set in „Slendro“ (pentatonisch, mit 5 Tönen) und eines in „Pelog“ (heptatonisch, mit 7 Tönen). ANGKLUNG | ist ein Bambus-Instrument, das seine Ursprünge in West-Java hat. Es besteht aus zwei bis vier Bambusrohren, die in einem Bambusrahmen aufgehängt und mit Rattanschnüren verbunden sind. Es wird geschüttelt und jedes Instrument erzeugt nur einen einzigen Ton. Erst viele Instrumente können eine Melodie bilden. Der kooperative Charakter der Angklung-Musik ist wesentlich für das Funktionieren eines Ensembles. Zusammenarbeit und gegenseitiger Respekt unter den Spielern, Disziplin, Verantwortung, Konzentration sowie das musikalische Gefühl stehen für Teamfähigkeit und Harmonie. ANGKLUNG gehört zum Weltkulturerbe Indonesiens seit 2010. Jelena Dabic: silk_road_reloaded for flute, tambura and percussion Ming Wang - Flute Jelena Dabic - Tambura Lin Chen - Percussion about the piece: As an allusion to the historic trading route, the world’s first and most famous online black market was created in 2011 under the name “silkroad.org". But the trading goods here were mostly drugs, weapons and various digital items. The web site was active for almost three years before the operators were arrested. In the first part of this composition, the original Silk Road of ancient times is represented through quotations from folk songs from the Balkans. These are then developed so that the music moves closer and closer to our time, a time where technology and internet dominate everyday life, where one can even order drugs online to be delivered at home. A paradox: exotic goods that had to be transported on the Silk Road over thousands of kilometers centuries ago, today are just a few clicks away...
